Role
IoT and full-stack engineer

Overview

Remote monitoring for Pirali’s brewery: a Raspberry Pi reads temperatures and equipment states from the brewhouse’s Siemens PLC every 10 seconds and stores them in Postgres. A bilingual web dashboard shows them, and SMS alerts and replies keep the team informed.

Tools

  • Raspberry Pi
  • Python
  • Siemens S7-200 SMART
  • PostgreSQL
  • Supabase
  • Next.js
  • ECharts
  • Tailscale

The need

The brewhouse is run by one Siemens S7-200 SMART PLC and a touch panel, and its data went nowhere else. Fermentation temperatures were written down by hand, and a drifting fermenter, a warming bright tank or a glycol failure overnight stayed unnoticed until someone walked past the panel.

Reading the PLC

After a site survey, the 11 Pt100 temperature sensors, the frequency drives and the valves were mapped to their places in the PLC’s memory. The PLC is read directly with python-snap7, instead of tapping serial lines, adding sensors or using the panel vendor’s cloud. A Raspberry Pi holds exactly one read-only connection, polls every 10 seconds, buffers in SQLite and sends batches to Postgres; an SMS responder on a USB modem answers a "status" text with a plant snapshot and sends alerts when mains power fails and returns.

The dashboard

A Next.js 16 dashboard with ECharts, in Georgian and English and in light and dark themes, shows an animated glycol diagram, a KPI row and an events log. It reads through a SELECT-only API behind a password. When the free Neon quota ran out, the database moved to Supabase, and an idempotent migration script copied the full history.

Result

Running on site since September 2026. 187,015 readings and 5,046 events moved from Neon to Supabase with 0 duplicates, and the dashboard scores 100 for accessibility in Lighthouse in both themes.
